Reflection Post

Hey everyone! This is my final post for Com 210 and I wanted to reflect over this semester about my favorite projects, my future, and my thoughts and comments on the class. I had a really good time taking this class and felt I learned a lot.

Over the course of the semester we did four different units on the different adobe software’s; Illustrator, Photoshop, Audition, and Premier. I have used all of these except Audition in the past so it was nice to refresh my skills. I think my favorite project was the Illustrator logo project because you could create anything you wanted as long as you knew how to transfer it to the software. I drew up multiple different logos and actually had a tough time choosing what I wanted to do. I really enjoy creating and designing ideas so this project was perfect for me. I got to use everything I knew how to do on Illustrator to create a design I am actually proud of.  This is the images I created on Illustrator that I am very proud of:

I plan to pursue my career in Hospitality Business Management and although I don’t know exactly where I want to take that, I do know that I would really like to be an event planner at some time. I really think I will use Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premier for my future jobs to create different multimedia creations to show clients. I could use illustrator to come up with room set ups I think would look good. Like the different layouts of table or venue settings. I could use Photoshop to put different features into a location to see how they look and to show my clients for ideas. Lastly I could use Premier to put together a portfolio of my work to post on my website for customers to see what I do. I really think these software’s are good for people to know how to use because they will be used in many different careers in the future as everything is becoming more technological.

I really think the four different software’s and set of skills that went along with each of them was the perfect amount for this class. These are the basics I think many people should know how to use like I stated above. For this being a beginning level class these skills were a great choice. If people really enjoyed these skills they can always move on to learned the other software’s Adobe has to offer.

When looking for outside sources I really only did that for the Premier unit. I realized that the images I was looking for to create my project were not what I had. Using Flickr to find free images that I was able to use and could help me create the look I was going for was really helpful. Other than that I just used the tutorials and videos given to us to complete each project.

My final thoughts on this course are good ones for sure. The one thing I like the most is that the class is only required to attend in person 5 time. Once for the first day, then once per unit. The way the class is set up it doesn’t really make sense to be there every day the class is scheduled. It is nice that there is the option to come every day and get help from the TA when something doesn’t make sense or you want advice on your projects.

I had a really good time taking this class and I hope everyone in the future enjoys it as much as I did! I hope everyone enjoyed my blog throughout the semester and I hope you all have a good rest of your day!

Final Premier Video Story

Hey guys! This is my final premier video for the course. I decided to create a video going along with my topic I chose for this class, which was event planning. I wanted to specify it a little more to what my goal it for my future job. I have always loved attending weddings and in my life so far I have attended a lot of them as a guest and a caterer. I love the details that go into every thing and I really do like planning events so I decided this is where I want to take my career. I chose to explain my reasons on why I want to pursue this and my favorite parts of weddings. I really wanted to use images that showed gorgeous settings and happy people, because weddings are happy occasions. The elements I used show my favorite parts of weddings. I used reception spaces because I think they show off the bride and grooms vision for the wedding because that is the spaces they can add personal details and everything is placed perfectly. I used an image of a wedding cake because I think that is one element I always look for when I attend weddings. I am not a huge cake person but i love the look of what the couple wanted and then how the bakery created that image onto a gorgeous dessert . Lastly I used an image of the ceremony space because seeing how they decorated the isle and the alter is always interesting. This is where they are going to have their first images as a married couple and normally the first place the guests see when they are attending.

I collected all these images on the free image websites because I wanted to use professional pictures to make this video look better. I proceeded to place them in the order I was going to talk about them in my video. Once I did that I recorded and placed my voice over, discussing the images and my plans for the future. I did have to edit the length of each image to make sure it matched up with the part I was talking about.

In all honesty I have been using premier since I was in high school, so I did not run into technical difficulties because I did what I know how to do to create this video. Premier does not have as many different tools to use compared to photoshop so it was much easier to remember what I was doing.

These are the different images I used on the project that I got from the free image website:

Final Logo Project

This has been one of my favorite projects so far because you get to show your creative side and create something that is really you. In keeping with the theme that I have chosen for this course I decided to create a catering company logo. I wanted this logo to be unique and be something you remember when you see it. I like the idea of logos being simple and not have to much going on because it’s hard to read things when that is happening.

To create this design I first started with creating the small knives because I knew that was going to be the hardest part. I found an image of a cartoon knife and used the pen tool to trace it and then proceeded to fill in the shape with the black color. Next I knew I wanted the first letter to be in a fancy script, so that took time looking through all the fonts to find the one I thought would be the best. Then I pieced together to first world with the knives as L’s to spell out Killer. I knew I wanted this logo to be different than others so having the word ‘catering’ start with a K gave it the effect of the 2 words having the same letter. I also did not just want the word to be below Killer in a normal sense so I added the dots to make it have another element. Lastly I added the teal color behind to make the words stand out and add a color pop to it.

After creating my draft logo I received a lot of feed back and the two main points in the feedback was to flip the knives to make them look more like L’s and to add another element to my logo to make it pop a little more. In my revisions I first rotated the knives 180 degrees, then proceeded to reflect them along the vertical axis so they looked more like L’s. Then because I knew I needed another element I played around with adding another color behind the word “Killer” and it just didn’t look how I wanted it too. So instead of doing that I added a drop shadow and really liked how that looked better.

I created many different images for this project and this is the one I thought would be the right amount of simple and something that is memorable. Especially because when you think of a catering company you think more happy and not “killer”, but I did say I wanted it to be different and something people would remember.

Logo Sketch

Hello! So this week I’ve been working on my logo sketch for the logo project we are doing this week and this has been my favorite part of this class all semester. I love being able to create different designs. The problem I’ve been having is that I really can’t decide which logo I want to us. I have narrowed it down to 2 different ones and would really like if you guys could help me choose which one to do. Thank you I would really appreciate it!

Final Graphic Design Project

I hope everyone has been surviving in the snow this week. It defiantly has started getting much colder which always makes me question why I came to a school where it gets below 20 degrees at any time in the year. I have been working with the feedback I’ve gotten on my draft graphic design project to make my final look much better. I only got a couple responses but they both said about the same thing which really helped me decide what I wanted to change on my draft.

The feedback I got mentioned I should change the background to something less plain than just a grey background, and I should rearrange my items on the poster to fill up more of the space. I looked around on the website Freeimages to try and find a background I liked that stayed simple but also added some texture to make it less plain. I found this background with a black border that added texture and depth to my poster  instead of it looking flat. I also moved around my words and lower images to fill up more of the blank space. I changed sizes and fonts of the smaller words to make them pop a little bit more.

I had fun creating this project on photoshop and can’t wait to continue this class with more of the adobe programs.

Graphic Design Project Draft

Hello again! I hope your week has been going great since last time I posted! I have been spending this week working on my graphic design project and since I have the draft done I wanted you all to help me out with how I should fix it. I decided to make a practice poster for future banquet events. This really ties into my blog topic because I am discussing my future in hospitality business management and one of those topics is event planning. I wanted this poster to be simple and not overly crowded because when is the last time you actually noticed a poster with so many things on it you couldn’t read it? The simple posters get more attention when surrounded by crazy signs around them. This poster if significant to me because it is using images from the restaurant Trails End in my home town, where I spent my summer catering and hosting. Deciding what I wanted to do with these images was not too difficult because we had posters for different events all over all the time. I have hung them up around downtown and given ideas on what they should say multiple times.

Creating this poster on photoshop was slightly difficult when it came to cropping all the background out of the beer taps. It took time to get it precise and how I liked it. The look of all the beer taps in a line is something I wanted to be the same focus of my poster because the image of them is something I really like. I was able to get these images because they are from pictures I have taken from being at the restaurant every day.

I know this is a poster I can improve and I would really appreciate all the feedback I can get to finalize my final project this coming up week! Thank you guys in advance and I hope you have a fantastic week!
